How to Use Test Device
-
1. Before Testing
Before opening your radon test kit, be sure that your doors and windows have been closed for at least 12 hours for accurate results.
If you have a radon mitigation system, it should be running at least 24 hours before starting radon test.
If you have purchased a digital device, please read instructions before using device.
-
2. Determining Where
For a real estate transaction, test the lowest livable level of the home.
For homeowners, test the lowest lived-in level of your home.
If your home has multiple foundations, you should test each of those foundation types.
Do you have an addiction? Test the original part of the house and the addition.
Basement and crawlspace? If yes, then test the basement and the room above the crawlspace.
Is your foundation over 2,000 square feet? If so, perform 2 radon tests.
-
3. Which Rooms to Test
In addition to testing the lowest livable areas, you should also test in rooms you use the most often like bedrooms, living rooms, and office.
Document start time and date along with any other requested information.
-
4. While Testing
If you are conducting a short term test, results are typically ready in 48 hours.
Be sure to keep windows and doors shut during this time for accurate results. Set window AC unites to recirculate if you have them. Set your furnace fan to auto.
Normal entry and exit are okay during testing.
-
5. Post Test
Carefully seal the radon test kit shut after test period. Record the stop time and date, and answer any remaining questions.
If using a digital device, you can share the results with your radon mitigation professional.
-
6. Interpreting Results
Radon is measured in picocuries. pc/L.
The EPA requires mitigation for results over 4.0 pc/L. It is possible that different rooms have vastly different results which is why testing different rooms is important.
If results are over 4.0 pc/L contact your local radon mitigation professional.
